"Up So High"

(written on 2/2/06)

Maybe the stars watch us too.
Or maybe they're scared,
scared of the lights,
afraid that crowds might gaze upon them.
No wonder they hate the cities.
Have you noticed,
they only put on shows when few are watching
like they don't like being praised.
Flattery isn't their style,
no, not at all.
They would very much like to sit and glimmer
then move along with the flow of the universe.
Because they have no worries or arguments,
they simply glow.

Maybe they were created
for us, so that we may see them
in our most solitude of times.
Up so high, to keep close but not touching
because we're people and they're stars,
we weren't meant to be one.
And so for ever will they stay,
high above us at night,
watching us live our lives
and die doing it.

How wise the stars are,
to know beyond themselves.
If only we were also made to live
the life of light in darkness,
and to watch others run around
so frantically with no finishline.
But no, that's not our destiny.
The stars are there to watch,
and we are here to perform.
A show that has no plot,
no script or set characters.
How spontaneous this act
can be, maybe that's why the stars
love to watch us.

And the day that we know beyond ourselves
is the day that we might
join the stars, sitting up so high,
and just shine.
